Frequently Asked Questions
What is the IADF?
The Independent Association of Dogtopia
Franchisees (IADF) is an organization dedicated to representing and
supporting Dogtopia franchise owners. We work to protect and enhance
the interests of franchisees, fostering a collaborative relationship
with Dogtopia corporate to ensure mutual success.
How can I join IADF?
To join IADF, visit our membership page
CLICK HERE. You'll find information about
membership benefits and an application form. Membership is open to
all current Dogtopia franchisees.
What does IADF do that can benefit me?
IADF conducts Annual FA & FDD Review: We
meticulously analyze and secure favorable terms just for association
members. Membership in IADF also gives you access to benefits from
being formed under the AAFD: access to major medical healthcare
plans for you and/or your staff, exclusive vendor discounts,
networking opportunities, and collectively we have a unified voice
in shaping Dogtopia's strategic roadmap.
Is it normal for franchise
systems to have an association?
Absolutely, it's the norm. You'll find active
associations with over 50% membership—a crucial milestone—at all the
major brands you might think of, like Domino's, Burger King, KFC, as
well as medium-sized outfits such as Gold's Gym, Anytime Fitness, and
Planet Fitness. Once a system crosses the threshold of 100 locations,
it becomes quite common, and the absence of an association can be seen
as a potential oversight.
With the potential for changes in ownership and the introduction of
new stakeholders with unknown intentions on the horizon, having an
organized association becomes crucial. The IADF provides stability and
a structured platform for all franchisees to navigate transitions
smoothly and safeguard their interests. Therefore, joining our
association not only aligns you with standard industry practices but
also secures a proactive stance in managing future uncertainties
effectively.
How does IADF work with Dogtopia corporate?
IADF maintains a collaborative relationship
with Dogtopia corporate while independently representing franchisee
interests. We engage in constructive dialogue on issues affecting
franchisees, negotiate on behalf of our members, and work towards
solutions that benefit both franchisees and the overall brand.
What is IADF's role in franchise agreement
negotiations?
IADF plays a crucial role in reviewing and
negotiating franchise agreements and FDDs. We leverage our collective
strength to advocate for fair terms and conditions that protect
franchisee interests while supporting the overall growth and success
of the Dogtopia brand.
How does IADF support new franchisees?
IADF offers valuable resources and support for
new franchisees, including mentorship programs, best practice sharing,
and access to a network of experienced franchise owners. We also
provide guidance on navigating the challenges of starting and growing
a Dogtopia franchise.
What committees does IADF have, and how can I
get involved?
IADF has several committees focusing on key
areas such as operations, marketing, and finance. Members can join
these committees to contribute their expertise and help shape IADF
initiatives. Contact us for more information on current committees and
how to participate.
How does IADF ensure transparency and
accountability?
IADF is committed to transparency in all our
operations. We regularly communicate with our members through
newsletters, meetings, and annual reports. Our leadership is elected
by and accountable to the membership, ensuring that we always act in
the best interests of Dogtopia franchisees.
What leverage does IADF have when negotiating?
The IADF's negotiating power is directly tied to our membership
numbers. Our goal is to reach 50% enrollment of all Dogtopia
franchisees, which is a critical threshold for several reasons:
- Collective Voice: With 50% enrollment, we
represent a majority of franchisees, giving us a much stronger and
more unified voice in negotiations.
- Proven Effectiveness: The American Association
of Franchisees and Dealers (AAFD), under whose umbrella we
operate, has extensive experience with hundreds of franchise
associations. Their data consistently shows that when an
association reaches 50% enrollment, franchise systems are
significantly more likely to listen to and seriously consider the
association's input.
- Legal and Practical Considerations: A majority
representation often carries more weight in legal and practical
matters related to franchise operations and agreements.
- Demonstrated Commitment: High enrollment
demonstrates to Dogtopia corporate that franchisees are serious
about collective representation and cannot be easily dismissed.
- Resource Pool: More members mean more resources
(both financial and expertise) to support our negotiation efforts.
It's imperative that all Dogtopia franchisees understand the
importance of joining IADF. Every new member increases our leverage,
bringing us closer to that crucial 50% mark. The experience of other
AAFD-represented associations shows that reaching this level of
enrollment can lead to more favorable outcomes in negotiations,
benefiting all franchisees.
Remember, in negotiations, numbers equal strength. Your membership
not only supports our current efforts but also enhances our ability
to advocate for your interests in future discussions with Dogtopia
corporate.
What is the purpose of having legal counsel?
As an independent association, it is in our
best collective interest to secure legal counsel to advise on issues
that pertain to the operation of our business such as federal
franchise law, franchise disclosure documents, SBA rules &
regulations, and employment law. All parties involved with the
Dogtopia system have been reasonable and working together well. We
have the right to take legal action if it is ever in the best
interests of the members of this association, but we view legal action
as a last case scenario, and do not expect it will be needed.
How much does it cost for multiple club
owners?
Your AAFD National dues of $49/M cover your
first store and each additional club is only $7/m. For example, the
monthly dues for an owner with 4 clubs is $70
Is the IAFD the same as the FAC?
No. The FAC is created and owned by the
Franchisor. FACs meet on the Franchisors schedule and typically the
franchisor sets the agenda and franchisees have minimal input. Also,
FACs generally lack any resources to advance an agenda
